How to get a PDF under 5 MB
This tool is set to compress your PDF to 5 MB or less. It tries progressively stronger image compression and stops at the first result that fits, so you keep the best quality the limit allows.
5 MB fits most scanned documents and reports with photos at good quality.
As a rough guide, 5 MB holds about 204 pages of plain text, 42 grayscale pages scanned at 150 DPI, or 14 colour pages at 150 DPI (around 5 colour pages at 300 DPI).
Limits of this size are typical on job sites, university applications, insurance claims and many online forms.
- 5 MB = 5,120 KB (5,242,880 bytes).
- Budget per page under 5 MB: about 1.0 MB for a 5-page file, 256 KB for 20 pages, 102 KB for 50 pages.
- Text and vector graphics are never compressed, so they stay sharp.
- If the limit can’t be reached, you’ll see how close it got. Try grayscale, or split the PDF and upload two parts.
- The size shown is the real file size in your Downloads folder.
Private by design
Your file is processed by your own browser, in memory. It is never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone, and the page’s security policy blocks it from sending data to other servers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress PDF to 5 MB free?
Add your PDF. The target is already set to 5 MB; nothing to configure. Click Compress and download the smaller PDF. It is preset to get the file under 5 MB and shows the final size.
Can I get a 10-page scan under 5 MB?
Usually yes. That is about 512 KB per page, enough for clear grayscale scans and often for colour at medium quality.
Why is my PDF still over 5 MB?
Either the file has very large images that can’t shrink further without becoming unreadable, or it contains many pages of vector content and fonts, which this tool never degrades. Grayscale, or splitting the file, usually gets it under 5 MB.
How do I compress a PDF?
Add the PDF, choose a compression level (or a target size), then click Compress PDF. The result shows the before and after size.
Will compression make my PDF blurry?
Text and vector graphics are never touched, so they stay sharp. Only images are recompressed. Light keeps images close to the original; Strong is visibly softer on photos.
Why didn’t my PDF get much smaller?
PDFs made from text (exported from Word, for example) contain few images, so there is little to compress. Large savings come from scans and photos.
