About pdffree
pdffree is a set of 129 free PDF tools with one rule: your files never leave your device.
Why we built it
Most online PDF tools upload your document to a server, process it there and send it back. That means contracts, ID scans, medical letters and bank statements sit, at least for a while, on a computer you don’t control. We wanted tools that are just as easy to use without that trade-off.
Modern browsers are powerful enough to do the work themselves. pdffree loads the tool into your browser, and your device merges, splits, compresses, converts, signs or encrypts the file in its own memory. Nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing for us to store, read, leak or delete.
How it works
- PDF editing uses pdf-lib; page previews and PDF-to-image use Mozilla’s pdf.js, the engine inside Firefox’s PDF viewer.
- Password protection and unlocking use qpdf, compiled to run in the browser, with AES-256 encryption.
- A strict security policy blocks the page from sending data to any other server; the only outside connection is optional, consent-based visit counting.
- After a tool page has loaded, it keeps working without an internet connection.
Free, without catches
No sign-up, no watermark, no daily limits and no premium tier holding back the useful settings. Because your device does the processing, running pdffree costs very little, and we intend to keep it free.
